Navigating the Twists & Turns of IVF
A path to parenthood is unique for each individual and couple pursuing family-building. While some are able to conceive naturally, many may need assisted reproductive technologies to achieve their family-building goals. In fact, 1 in 8 couples will pursue fertility treatments, including IVF (in vitro fertilization), in order to start and/or grow their families.
In a candid conversation, Dr. Taraneh Nazem, Reproductive Endocrinologist and Fertility Specialist at RMA of New York, spoke with Lauren Berson, Founder and CEO of Conceive, about navigating an IVF journey. Their conversation elucidated what to expect while undergoing treatment for IVF, the challenges individuals may face as they reconcile expectations versus reality, and the silver linings to consider when the journey gets overwhelming.
Of Conceive, Lauren says, “I came up with the idea because along the way you face a lot of trial and error and what I call the unknown unknowns. None of us going into this typically are experts in this space. We’re figuring it out and piecing it together as we go along and even when we have the best doctors there are still so many questions because you’re just a patient learning this for the first time.”
In an effort to better understand those unknowns, Dr. Nazem emphasizes working closely with your reproductive endocrinologist: “It all starts at your consultation with your doctor, figuring out what makes sense for you, what your diagnostics show, what your family-building goals are, and what we’re trying to achieve. The important preamble is that meeting of the minds between a patient and their doctor to set their goals, what they can expect, and does this make sense.”
