Egg Donation for Family Building
Egg donation is an option for those whose own eggs are unable to achieve a pregnancy due to advanced reproductive age, genetic abnormalities, previous surgeries, and/or other conditions. On a recent webinar, Dr. Phillip Romanski, reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at RMA of New York, and Dr. Georgia Witkin, Director of Psychological Services at RMA of New York, hosted a candid discussion on egg donation; how to use donor eggs for family-building and the emotional aspects of the process.
Patients who decide to pursue egg donation often have many questions around egg donor selection. Dr. Romanski emphasizes that the most important consideration is to use donor eggs of the highest quality from reputable egg banks. Fortunately, RMA of New York has a long history of success with several egg banks, including Fairfax EggBank, that have helped many individuals and couples realize their family-building goals. As patients review profiles of potential donors, Dr. Romanski advises determining those traits that are most important to find in a donor. A wide variety of information is available on egg donors, including medical history, race, religion, and education, to help patients select their ideal donor.
Dr. Witkin addresses the emotional aspects of egg donation which can often be a challenging process to navigate for parents-to-be. Many egg recipients have questions such as, should the parents ever tell the child? When is it appropriate to share information on how their child was conceived? Should parents keep egg donation a secret from their friends and family?
