Ashley’s Journey

I knew I wanted to be a mother from a young age. My husband, Steve, and I discussed our family goals early in our relationship, and we both dreamed of becoming parents.

However, our journey to parenthood was filled with heartbreak. We experienced a miscarriage, undiagnosed uterine polyps, a canceled intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle during the pandemic, and the devastating stillbirth of our son, Christopher. We felt unheard and frustrated by our previous doctors and needed a change.

Friends introduced us to Dr. Lucky Sekhon at the RMA of New York Downtown office. In our first conversation, Lucky acknowledged our grief and assured us she would help us build the family we dreamed of. My experience with RMA of New York was different from the start—I immediately felt I was in good hands.

We did an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, and to my surprise, I became pregnant naturally while waiting for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) on the embryos. Unfortunately, I had another miscarriage and needed a D&C and then another surgery to remove scar tissue in my uterus.

My first embryo transfer resulted in a pregnancy, but sadly ended in yet another miscarriage. While we were distraught, Dr. Sekhon remained optimistic, and we decided to give it one last try. The embryo transfer was successful, and Dr. Sekhon referred me to Dr. Joanne Stone, a renowned physician in maternal-fetal medicine. Dr. Stone is the director of the Mount Sinai – Rainbow Clinic. The clinic specializes in supporting patients who have experienced stillbirth, multiple miscarriages, or neonatal loss, offering the extra care needed to help prevent another loss.

Our daughter, Penny, whom we affectionately refer to as our “Lucky Penny” in honor of Dr. Sekhon, was born on Thanksgiving Day. Being Penny’s mom is the most important thing I’ve done. She’s given me purpose and the laughter and joy that was missing from my life for so long. She’s happy, healthy, and so very loved. It was a long journey, but the journey was worth it. Steve and I will be forever grateful to Dr. Sekhon and RMA of New York, and Dr. Stone and the Rainbow Clinic at Mount Sinai for making our dream of becoming parents a reality.

There are many roads to becoming a parent, and mine was hard. My experience with breast cancer, and my fertility and surrogacy journey, turned me into the woman and mother I am today.

Sarrah’s Journey

Sarrah shares her experience with oncofertility, a fertility preservation treatment that takes place before undergoing cancer treatments that may harm current fertility levels, under the care of Dr. Erkan Buyuk. After beating cancer, she welcomed her son Chance, born via gestational surrogacy.

Gestational Surrogacy

  1. Gestational surrogacy is a process in which the individual carrying the pregnancy is not biologically related to the eggs that were used to create the embryo and is not the intended parent. Our Third Party concierge team assists individuals needing an egg donor, sperm donor, and/or a gestational surrogate (gestational carrier).

There are many roads to becoming a parent, and mine was hard. My experience with breast cancer, and my fertility and surrogacy journey, turned me into the woman and mother I am today.

Sarrah’s Journey

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 38, I was unaware that chemotherapy and radiation could affect my fertility. I was surprised when my breast surgeon, Dr. Elisa Port, Chief of Breast Surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System and Director of the Dubin Breast Center of The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai, referred me for fertility treatment.

Dr. Port explained that the chemotherapy would likely make me infertile, so preserving my current fertility level was crucial if I wanted to have biological children in the future.

I met with Dr. Erkan Buyuk at the Eastside office. Dr. Port and Dr. Buyuk agreed that I had time for two rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) before starting treatment—the result: one frozen embryo.

After going into remission, I faced another challenge. Not only was I infertile, but I also wouldn’t be able to carry a pregnancy. My partner, James, and I worked with RMA of New York’s Third Party Team to find a gestational surrogate. The embryo transfer and pregnancy were successful, and we soon welcomed our baby boy, Chance. I look at him and marvel; he’s an absolute miracle. We are so grateful to Mount Sinai and RMA of New York for my health and our child.

Kyla’s Journey

My partner, Joseph, and I met and fell in love in our early twenties. Our first pregnancy came as a happy surprise, but unfortunately, it ended in a miscarriage at five weeks. We realized how much we both wanted a family and began trying to conceive. After a few years, I became pregnant once more. Sadly, this second pregnancy also ended in miscarriage at the five-week mark.

My OB/GYN reassured us that miscarriages are common and wasn’t concerned with the amount of time it took to achieve a second pregnancy due to my young age. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.

It was Joseph who first suggested we consider in vitro fertilization (IVF). Though cost was a concern, we were relieved to discover that Joseph’s health insurance covered fertility treatments. After thorough research, I scheduled a consultation at RMA of New York. I was thrilled to find an office just 25 minutes away in Mount Kisco, Westchester.

At RMA of New York, I felt like more than just a patient - I genuinely connected with Dr. Rachel Gerber. Joseph and I had nine embryos after one round of IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). My first two transfers were both girl embryos. The first transfer didn’t succeed, and the second ended in my third miscarriage.

I began having dreams about a baby boy. Dr. Gerber suggested we transfer a boy embryo for the third attempt. The transfer and pregnancy were successful, and we were overjoyed to welcome our healthy baby boy, Krew.

Our journey to parenthood was long and challenging, but our perseverance and the support of the RMA of New York team made their dream a reality.

Pregnancy Loss and Stillbirth: Navigating Grief and Hope with Ashley

Ashley, a former contestant on The Bachelor, experienced multiple pregnancy losses when initially trying to start her family. These unfortunate circumstances took a profound emotional and physical toll on Ashley, yet she never lost sight of the importance of having a support system throughout her long journey. “The pain of losing a child you never got to meet is unlike anything else. But sharing my story and talking about my experience has helped me feel less alone,” Ashely says. After meeting and receiving care from Lucky Sekhon, MD, Reproductive Endocrinologist at RMA of New York and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Ashley had a successful transfer and with the support of Joanne Stone, MD, MS, Director of the Mount Sinai—Rainbow Clinic and System Chair of the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School, welcomed a daughter, her “lucky” Penny. The Mount Sinai—Rainbow Clinic, which provides emotional support and advanced medical attention, is a refuge for parents who have previously experienced perinatal loss.

Oncofertility: A Brave New Chapter for Breast Cancer Survivor Sarrah

When Sarrah received a life-altering diagnosis from her breast surgeon, Elisa Port, MD, FACS, Chief of Breast Surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System and Director of the Dubin Breast Center, Sarrah felt uncertain about her health and the future of her fertility because cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, can often harm the reproductive system and put fertility at risk. Sarrah was referred to RMA of New York to expedite fertility preservation treatment and her family-building journey. Under the guidance of her Reproductive Endocrinologist, Erkan Buyuk, MD, Clinical Professor in the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School and Fellowship Director, Sarrah and her partner, James, transferred their one healthy embryo to a surrogate and fortunately welcomed their son into the world. Reflecting on the experience, Sarrah shares: “I never imagined that my cancer journey would also lead to a path toward motherhood, but thanks to the oncofertility options available to me, I was given the chance to create the family of my dreams.”

Egg Freezing: Empowering the Future with Carissa

Carissa, a successful professional in her late 30s, decided to safeguard her fertility with egg freezing and focus on her career. Guided by Taraneh Nazem, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor in the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School, she found confidence in her reproductive future. “Egg freezing has given me control of my reproductive future. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself because it’s allowed me to focus on my career and personal goals without the pressure of a ticking biological clock,” she explains. Driven by her passion for women’s health and empowerment, Carissa turned her positive experience into action, advocating for workplace benefits and encouraging her colleagues and friends to take charge of their reproductive health. Her story emphasizes the importance of seeking a fertility work-up at a younger age to better understand family-building options available now or in the future.

Fertility Benefits: The Growing Need for Workplace Support with Kyla

After experiencing pregnancy loss, Kyla and her partner yearned to grow their family and were fortunate to learn they had access to coverage through state employee benefits. Without hesitation, Kyla sought the services and expertise of Rachel Gerber, MD, a Reproductive Endocrinologist at RMA of New York – Westchester and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School. Through Dr. Gerber’s critical care and the support of family, Kyla and her partner welcomed a baby boy born just last year. “The fertility benefits offered at Joseph’s company were a game-changer. Having access to treatment options without the financial burden allowed us to start our family on our terms,” shares Kyla. Their story underscores the importance of fertility benefits as a critical part of comprehensive healthcare in modern workplaces and the need for broader coverage to help employees facing fertility challenges.

By sharing these powerful stories, RMA of New York aims to foster open conversations about fertility, break the stigma surrounding infertility, and advocate for improved healthcare and workplace support. Carissa’s Journey

I made a bold move from Seattle to New York City in my early twenties to pursue my dream of a career in fashion. Over the next decade, I built a fulfilling life in the city, surrounded by friends, a love for running, and jobs that fed my passion.

I began considering fertility preservation at age 33. I knew I wanted children but wasn’t interested in settling for a partner who wasn’t the right person simply because of my biological clock. Unfortunately, my employer's benefits at the time did not cover reproductive medicine, so I started looking for a new job. I spoke to recruiters and hiring managers about fertility benefits and chose a role that helped cover the cost of egg freezing.

I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Nazem. It felt like such a good fit that we decided to start right away. Dr. Nazem carefully tailored the egg-retrieval timing around my NYC marathon training schedule to accommodate the exercise restrictions that come with the fertility preservation process.

The convenience of multiple RMA locations around the city made the process smoother. I visited a location near work for my daily morning monitoring appointments and did bloodwork on the weekends close to home. I always felt the whole team of physicians and nurses cared for me, regardless of location.

After two cycles of egg freezing, Dr. Nazem and I were satisfied with the number of eggs collected. While the process was mentally and physically challenging, I am grateful for the decision that allowed me to take control of my future family-building journey. Today, I’m dedicated to supporting other women who are considering or going through fertility preservation.
